Is flame retardant fabric toxic?

2024011303215755

Flame retardant fabric is a type of flame-resistant material with a wide range of applications, including protective gear for firefighters, command uniforms, welding suits, arc flash protective clothing, spacesuits, racing suits, and even curtains and carpets in some homes and hotels. There have been ongoing concerns about the safety of flame retardant materials, primarily related to the potential release of toxic substances.

Whether flame retardant materials are harmful to the human body depends on the type of material. Most flame retardant materials do not release toxic substances and are harmless to the body. However, some polyurethane organic flame retardants may emit harmful gases such as benzene and formaldehyde at high temperatures. Short-term exposure to high concentrations of flame retardant smoke and dust may cause symptoms such as dizziness, coughing, and chest tightness, while long-term exposure may lead to blood toxicity effects.

Some flame retardant materials, such as inorganic aluminum hydroxide cotton, are non-toxic and non-corrosive to the body, but a small amount of heavy metals may be used in their production. However, due to the varied performance and effects under different conditions, it is advisable to choose products that comply with national safety standards.

Flame retardant fabric is either inherently flame retardant, made from materials like aramid and modacrylic, or it is a fabric like cotton or polyester with an added flame retardant coating to achieve flame resistance. Regardless of the type of flame retardant fabric, products that meet the standard production requirements are harmless to the human body.
